What makes a Thriller Genre?
Conventional characters: The protagonist (Hero), the antagonist (villain), the innocent victims, characters with dark pasts, psychotic individuals, terrorists and spies. The Hero is an outsider, isolated and secretive. The Narrative usually revolves around a puzzle or the investigation of an enigma this keeps the audience cliff-hanging at the *edge of their seats* as the plot builds up towards a climax (plot twists and cliff hangers are used extensively.)A thriller is usually villain-driven plot, whereby he or she presents obstacles that the protagonist must overcome. The enigma or puzzle is usually solved at the end of the film by the protagonist. Sometimes the antagonist’s identity is kept a secret until the very end of the movie, like in the movie Se7en. There are many conventions of the Thriller genre, and this site will provide a few of the most important and intricate conventions. |
