Task 1 - printwork drafts
Add all drafts of printwork to your site. You must ensure that there is a relationship between the video and the digipak cover and advert. This may be in the form of how you have represented the artist or in the ways that visual symbols or themes can be seen represented in both the video and the print texts.
Task 2 - explanations of video and printwork relationship
Add some explanation of your ideas and concepts next to your drafts including a clear explanation of its relationship with the music video. You will be able to use these ideas in your evaluation.
Task 3 - blog
Once this has been blogged you can see me on getting the go ahead to start filming your music video.
Explaining your decisions
We chose this design for the front cover of the CD for a number of reasons.
Mainly because a common convention of Macklemore’s previous CD covers was that they relied heavily on symbolism to represent the themes of the song. Therefore we have followed this same convention and used symbolism to represent the main themes of our song on the CD cover.
The collage of drug addicts in the background symbolises the group of people struggling with drug addiction who Macklemore is trying to help in this song. The collage represents this idea of a community trying to help each-other through their struggles.
The skull with the pill on its tongue obviously symbolises the severe consequence of drug use which is death. However, we have also incorporated a white rose inside of the skull and this is used to symbolise one of Macklemore’s ideologies which he lives by which is this idea that there is always hope for everybody and that no matter how difficult your situation, there will always be a way to overcome it.
Back Cover
The composition of the CD cover was designed so that on the front cover you see the front of the skull and on the back cover you see the back of the skull. From a purely aesthetic point of view, we felt that this gave the Digi-pack a stylish and professional look.
The skull is again used to symbolise the serious danger that comes with drug use and the equals sign engraved on the skull is used to symbolise one of Macklemore’s largest ideologies which is equality.
Although the theme of equality is not present in the song we are using, we feel as though it is still important to represent this theme on the CD cover because Macklemore himself is always promoting equality in whatever way he can.
Inside Cover design 1
The inside cover design 1 shows a bottle of codeine being spilled onto a CD. We used this image to symbolise Macklemore’s belief that drugs are taking over and tainting the music industry.
Inside Cover design 2
The inside cover design 2 has the same picture of a bottle of codeine being spilled onto a CD to symbolise Macklemore's beliefs about drugs tainting the music industry, but the picture is formatted differently and it is isolated to the inside right. On the inside left of design 2 there is a brick wall with many different addictive substances and a skull graffitied onto the wall. The addictive substances and the skull are a way of symbolising the negative effects of drug abuse; they can take over your life and eventually kill you. The brick wall helps establish a clear link between the video and the Digi-pack because in the video we use a brick wall as the location for the performance. Furthermore, the brick wall represents the inner city areas where drug abuse is more prominent and also symbolises the feeling of restrictiveness and internal entrapment that a lot of drug addicts experience.
Advert design 1
For the advert design, we used symbolism again to represent the artist and the prominent themes of the song.
Similar to the design style we saw in the ‘Wings’ cover, there are drugs scattered everywhere on the table which connotes that these addictive substances completely took over Macklemore’s life.
The skull inside of the cigarette smoke symbolises the theme of death present in the song. It is also a suggestive way of saying that all of these drugs contain the potential to cause death.
Another theme in the song is the danger of idol worship and how our idols who encourage certain types of behaviour may not actually be engaging in it themselves. We used a crumbling Hollywood sign in the background and ripped posters of Lil Wayne with only half of his face showing to symbolise this as it suggests that he is two faced because the things he says he does are different to the things he actually does.
Advert design 2
In advert design 2 there is a brick wall with ripped posters of Lil Wayne on it with half of his face missing; again this is used to represent the theme of the dangers of idol worship and the harsh reality of a hedonistic lifestyle since it suggests that Lil Wayne is two faced because he raps about doing things like drugs in his music but probably doesn't in real life. The advert is black and white except for the pink liquid spilling down the wall which helps highlight the main addictive substance of the song; codeine cough syrup. This is also used to symbolise the way in which these addictive substances can take over your life to the point that all you seem to notice is the drugs. We again used a brick wall as the background which is effective in establishing a link between the advert and the video since the brick wall is the main location for the performance section. The brick wall in the advert puts further emphasis on the representation of inner city areas where drug abuse is most common.
